RARITY AT AMBLE BRAID – Lesser Grey Shrike<\/h4>\n

Today, 5th November 2024, the county had its first recorded sighting since 2013 (I think) of a Lesser Grey Shrike. Seen on the trees at Amble Braid it attracted quite a few bird watchers, including Neil, Alan. Margaret and Richard. Photo by Neil<\/p>\n

An interesting end to September at the Howick Ringing Station<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Member Phil Hanmer leads a group of ringers at Howick in the migration times.<\/p>\n

The last weekend of this September (2024) brought together an interesting group of birds.<\/p>\n

There was a Yellow-browed Warbler (quite regularly rung\u00a0 nowadays), a Common Rosefinch (less common) and the star, a Hume’s Leaf Warbler which is a rare vagrant – non recorded between 2014 and 2022.<\/p>\n

The Hume’s Leaf Warbler is described by Phil as “a washed out (drab) edition of the Yellow-browed Warbler” . It was split from the Yellow-browed by the specialists. Breeding from Mongolia to the Hindu Kush it migrates to winter in India. This one was 3000 miles from its usual winter home.<\/p>\n

The Common Rosefinch also breeds in N Asia and winters in India and so have those two birds been travelling together perhaps?<\/p>\n

On the 19th Nov. the field trip was to Holy Island. The highlight of the visit was undoubtedly at the end as we walked back along the Crooked Lonnen to the car park. No less than 5 Short-eared Owls were seen in flight and perching. They were two or three fields away but Margaret got some good shots of them in flight.<\/p>\n

A visit to Spindlestone gave much, much closer sightings of a Kingfisher – great shots from Margaret.<\/p>\n

Following John McC’s visit on Monday, I decided to have a walk round Branton Ponds and Hedgely yesterday. On the river at Hedgely, one Grey Heron.<\/h4>\n

However Branton was full of birds, with Chiffchaff at seemingly every 50 metres. The highlights for me were watching a Bullfinch picking off buds (far too high and twiggy for a photo) and watching a Reed Bunting (for ages) picking of seed heads from a bulrush. He didn’t fly away with material but just clung there taking off the seeds.<\/p>\n

I can never get a decent photo of a Wren. They are always in scrub or dashing around at ground level. I guess you have to be at a nest site. The Goldfinch appeared from nowhere and then was off whilst I saw two Greast Crested Grebe at the start of the walk and then they “disappeared”.<\/p>\n

John went to Branton Ponds today and amongst his 34 species seen were Chiffchaff, Dunnock and Pied Wagtail. Going onto Wooler Common a Robin posed for the camera.<\/h4>\n

Club members Martine and Paul were on a usual walk on Saturday morning (near Embleton’s Golf Course) when a barn owl slowly flew towards them from the bottom of the hill and landed metres from them in the bracken. Marine took the photo as it flew off again. “A lucky shot with my pocket camera”, she says., “It got so close, we held our breath and didn\u2019t dare even to blink.”<\/div>\n

Two members, both Davids, went to the Harthope Valley yesterday to see the ring ouzels that arrive in fields alongside Hareshaw Linn.<\/p>\n

    With a circular route form Allerburn Lea, Margaret and Alan saw some good birding sights, So they have been watching a lapwing family with 3 chicks – how special.<\/p>\n

    Along the Aln they have regularly seen a pair of goosanders and then there is the buzzard overhead – watch out lapwing chicks!<\/p>\n

    David Richens was at Norham on Monday afternoon (28th Oct.) and was lucky enough to see the arrival of over 100 Whooper Swans. After 15 mins. they were on their way elsewhere! But here is the evidence Thanks David<\/p>\n

    Mistle Thrushes on Wooler Common<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Last week David Richens saw 20 or so Mistle Thrush feeding on berries – an influx from the continent perhaps?<\/p>\n

    I’ve just put Phil Hanmer’s September Ringers Report on the Website and in it he writes about his team trapping 6 Mistle Thrushes at Howick around the same time as David saw his. Phil thinks that they were a local flock rather than from the continent.<\/p>\n
